I've got to agree that this is one of the best on-line games I've ever played! You need a bit of patience as it's only 3 turns per week but to do well it couldn't be played much faster. The opportunities to do well are almost endless. Want to be a warship? A trader? An exploration vessel? An Alien Hunter(MY personal favorite way of advancement)? A medical Researcher? Want to run for President? Be an Immortal Prophet of one of the Great Old Ones? Diplomacy is often critical as well as combat and logistics skills! I must admit that I have been bored once or twice in my 7-8 years of playing the game...mostly when I have built a large(well actually I like to keep my ships more smallish and fast and dangerous than huge plodding deathstars :)) and powerful ship that is a serious threat to every 'almost' every other ship in the game! At which point I can just restart and start the fun all over again!!
I would highly recommend this game to anyone with a bit of patience and some diplomatic and tactical/strategic abilities. As has been mentioned before you definitely get out of this game what you put into it! What more could you ask of a game??

Ive been playing To Boldly Go (TBG) for over 7 years now (about 1,100 of TBGs 1,300 turns), and the depth and quality of the game continues to amaze me. This is the ultimate thinking-persons game -- excelling at TBG means being able to develop your ship while engaging in a careful balance of exploration, combat, diplomacy, role-playing, and more.
TBG has seen the rise (and fall) of sophisticated alliances -- often with even more sophisticated data-collection and analysis systems -- yet independent ships can and do thrive (and arguably are even better positioned to ascend to positions of power).
A *must* for sci-fi strategy gamers!
